Water Sampling

Complete information sheets must accompany each sample and can be downloaded/ printed.

Please fill in all information on this form if you require interpretation of results and recommendations. Please attach further information if you are concerned about specific problems or symptoms. This information should be sent with each sample.

Note: The following directions are for sampling for standard chemical analyses. Please contact the office for specific details for sampling and handling of HACCP microbial water samples.

300 - 500ml of water is required for each sample. The sample bottle (preferably plastic) must be clean and rinsed at least three times with the sample water before filling and tightly sealing the bottle. Do not use any bottle that has contained fertiliser, concentrated acid or alkaline solutions. Do not fill the sample bottle from a hose that has been contaminated with fertiliser or chemicals or used to fill a spray or fertiliser tank.

Dam

Take the sample away from the edge of the dam and from just below the surface. The sample must not be taken from the edge of the dam where the weed is growing, from near main inflow area, from near the spillway or from near the pump site.

Creek/River

Take the sample from the main flow area of the stream where there is a constant movement of water. Do not take the sample from backwaters or from where there is little or no flow.

Bore

For currently used bores, allow the water to flow for at least 15 minutes before collecting the sample.

New bores should be allowed to run for a number of hours to allow the flow to become stable, and to allow new water flows to move into the suction zone. The bore driller should provide information on the time required to allow the bore to settle.

For disused bores allow the water to flow for at least 3 hours before taking the sample.

Surface/Irrigation Scheme

Make sure that there have been flows in the pipe/channel system before taking the sample. If unsure, run your own pump for at least 3 hours before sampling.
